What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves the use of very fine, sterile needles placed at specific points on the body to help reduce pain, ease tension and supports your body’s natural ability to heal. We use both TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and Western Trigger point approach dependent upon which is deemed most appropriate for your case. Many people find acupuncture calming, restorative and a helpful addition to their physiotherapy care.
How do I know if Acupuncture is right for me?
Our physiotherapists often choose to offer acupuncture if stress, tension or persistent pain are playing a role. It’s suitable for most individuals and can be adapted to your comfort level, goals and lifestyle.
Your therapist will guide you through each step, answer any questions and make sure you feel comfortable throughout.

Acupuncture works by encouraging better circulation, reducing irritation in sensitive tissues and helping the nervous system settle. This makes it a great option for a wide range of issues — from muscle tightness and joint pain to headaches, stress-related tension and long-standing discomfort. It can also be used to support recovery from sports injuries or to help manage flare-ups of chronic conditions.

WHAT TO EXPECT
What happens in an Acupuncture session?
Each session is tailored entirely to you. Your therapist will talk through your symptoms, explain what they’re doing and place the needles gently and precisely. Most people are surprised by how comfortable the treatment feels; the needles are extremely thin, and sensations are usually mild — often described as a dull ache, warmth or a gentle heaviness. You’ll then rest for a short period while the treatment works, giving you time to unwind and relax.
How does Acupuncture work with physiotherapy and my recovery?
Acupuncture works well alongside physiotherapy. While hands-on treatment and exercise rehabilitation target strength, mobility and movement patterns, acupuncture helps to calm irritated tissues, reduce pain and support the body’s healing response. Together, they create a balanced approach that addresses both the symptoms and the underlying causes.
OTHER TREATMENTS TO SUPPORT YOUR RECOVERY
Alongside Acupuncture, our physiotherapists are trained in manual therapy, ultrasound and shockwave therapy to compliment your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Most patients feel little to no pain. A mild, dull ache, warmth or heaviness is normal - this is the De Qi sensation, indicating the body is responding to treatment. Needles are extremely fine, and many people don’t feel insertion at all.
-
Generally yes — when performed by a trained practitioner. However, acupuncture should not be used if you:
are allergic to stainless steel
have a severe needle phobia
have an infection or poor skin condition at the treatment site
It should be used with caution if you have haemophilia, lymphoedema, are pregnant, have epilepsy, or have a weakened immune system.
-
Most side effects are mild: slight bruising, temporary soreness, or fatigue. Serious complications are rare when treatment is performed by a qualified practitioner.
-
This varies by condition. Many people notice changes within a few sessions, but chronic conditions may require longer treatment plans.
Our practitioners will typically discuss this during your initial consultation.
-
Whilst this depends upon what area will be treated, we usually advise:
Hips & Knees: Loose shorts or baggy trousers
Back: Loose, relaxed t-shirt.
Shoulders & Neck: a vest
