How does Therapeutic Ultrasound work ?
Ultrasound therapy works by increasing circulation and stimulating the body’s natural healing processes. The high-frequency sound waves create a warming effect and micro-vibrations deep within tissues, helping to reduce stiffness, ease tension and improve tissue flexibility. This makes it particularly useful for soft-tissue injuries, tendon problems, muscle strains, scar tissue and areas that feel tight or sensitive.
-
Ultrasound therapy is used alongside hands-on treatment and exercise rehabilitation. While manual therapy and movement retraining help restore strength, mobility and balance, ultrasound supports the healing environment within the tissues themselves. Together, they create a well-rounded approach that addresses both symptoms and underlying causes.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Is Ultrasound right for me?
People often choose ultrasound therapy when they’re dealing with a recent injury, lingering discomfort or an area that feels particularly sensitive or inflamed. It’s a safe, widely used treatment that can be adapted to your comfort level and specific goals.
Your therapist will explain each step, check in with you regularly and make sure the treatment feels comfortable and beneficial.
We offer a free 10 minute chat with one of our team to see if physiotherapy is right for you, discuss your issue and to find out how we can support your recovery.
OTHER TREATMENTS TO SUPPORT YOUR RECOVERY
Alongside manual therapy, our physiotherapists are trained in manual physiotherapy, acupuncture and shockwave therapy to compliment your treatment.
What can I expect during a session of Ultrasound?
Your therapist will apply a smooth gel to the treatment area, allowing the ultrasound head to glide easily over the skin. You’ll usually feel a mild warmth or nothing at all — the treatment is designed to be soothing and pain-free. Sessions typically last around 5–10 minutes and can be combined with other physiotherapy techniques during the same appointment.

Not all patients are referred through to us by their GP and everyone is more than welcome to book in with us if they have any concerns relating to an injury or condition that they think we will be able to help with.
If you’re not sure whether a physiotherapy session is relevant for you, we are able to offer potential patients a free 15 minute phone-based appointment with our experienced physiotherapists to discuss your injury. To book in with us call our friendly reception team on 01433 623 602 or click on ‘Book Appointment’ at the top of this page.

For our physiotherapists to begin ultrasound, we would first need to complete an initial assessment where your injury would be discussed in detail along with your goals and a recovery timeline. The hour-long session would also include treatment* and, if suitable, our physiotherapist may be able to administer ultrasound therapy.
Patients would then be able to book in for a follow-up session to continue treatment.
*Treatment during the initial assessment is only possible for the 1-hour session. Treatment is not available during the 30-minute initial assessment (due to time constraints).
-
Most people feel nothing at all during treatment. Occasionally, mild warmth or slight discomfort may occur, and patients should inform the therapist if they feel pain.
-
Ultrasound is generally considered a safe a low-risk treatment when used appropriately.
However, it shouldn’t be used over areas with cancer, during pregnancy, on children or over open wounds or metal implants (due to risk of burns).
-
During treatment, patients may experience a minor discomfort during cavitation-based treatments however these risks are very rare when performed by trained practitioners (which all staff at Bank on Movement are).
-
Whilst this depends upon what area will be treated, we usually advise:
Hips & Knees: Loose shorts or baggy trousers
Back: Loose, relaxed t-shirt.
Shoulders & Neck: a vest
