What is Sports Massage Therapy?
Sports massage therapy focuses on the muscles, soft tissues and movement patterns that keep you active — whether that’s on the pitch, at work or simply going about your day.
This type of massage uses a combination of deep tissue techniques, targeted pressure and stretching to release tight areas, improve circulation and ease discomfort. It’s particularly effective for reducing muscle stiffness, supporting recovery after activity and helping prevent small niggles from turning into bigger issues. Many people also find it boosts their flexibility, improves posture and leaves them feeling lighter, freer and more comfortable in their body.

What are the benefits of Sports Massage Therapy?
One of the biggest benefits of sports massage is how adaptable it is. You don’t need to be a gym‑goer or sports fanatic to feel the difference. If you sit at a desk, lift children, enjoy long walks, work in a physically demanding job or simply feel the effects of stress in your shoulders or back, sports massage can help. It’s designed to meet you where you are — whether you’re managing a long‑standing problem, recovering from an injury or just wanting to feel more at ease day to day.
Sports massage also offers a valuable moment of reset. By calming irritated tissues and encouraging better movement, it helps your body unwind and rebalance. Many people notice improvements not just in how they move, but in how they sleep, concentrate and cope with daily pressures.
Ultimately, sports massage therapy is about supporting healthy, comfortable movement for everyone. It’s a friendly, approachable treatment that fits naturally into everyday life, helping you stay active, feel better and move with confidence. If you’re looking for a practical, effective way to take care of your body, sports massage is a great place to start.
OTHER TREATMENTS TO SUPPORT YOUR RECOVERY
Alongside Sports Massage Therapy, our physiotherapists are trained in manual therapy, acupuncture, ultrasound and shockwave therapy to compliment your treatment.
Katie, our Sports Massage Therapist, will refer you to our physiotherapists for further assessment and treatment if necessary.
Is Sports Massage Therapy right for me?
If you want to move better, feel lighter, and recover faster without having to overhaul your entire routine then sports massage therapy is right for you!
Sports massage targets the muscles and soft tissues that work hardest for you day‑to‑day—whether that’s during training, long work hours, or simply keeping up with life. It helps reduce tension, improve circulation, and restore mobility in areas that feel tight, overworked, or restricted.
You’ll notice the difference most in the places you’ve been ignoring: stiff shoulders, tight hips, a lower back that complains after sitting, or calves that feel heavy after exercise. Sports massage works directly on these problem areas, easing discomfort and improving how your body performs under load. It also supports recovery by clearing metabolic waste and boosting blood flow, helping you bounce back quicker and with fewer niggles.
If you value staying active, preventing injuries, and feeling physically capable, sports massage becomes a practical tool—not a luxury. It keeps your body functioning at its best so you can train harder, move freely, and stay ahead of aches before they become issues.
WHAT OUR PATIENTS SAY
★★★★★
“Katie was nothing short of fantastic in sorting out my upper back tension before an event. She was able to reassure me and gave me ongoing advice to help me manage the condition myself and how to fit this into my training schedule.”
HG, Hope

Frequently asked questions
Got a question? We’ve answered some of the things we’re most often asked below. If you can’t find the answer you need here, please get in touch and we’d be happy to help.
-
For an appointment with our Sports Massage Therapist, Katie, this can be booked via the phone, online or via email.
See our Contact Us page for more information.
-
No GP referral is needed to access our sports massage service.
-
The first session that is booked will be an initial assessment with our Sports Massage Therapist. Within this 1-hours appointment, Katie will go through your history (including any previous injuries and treatment), your exercise level and what your goals are (whether that be supporting your current exercise regime or ease daily pain/stiffness).
After the initial assessment, the following sessions will mainly focus around massage and these sessions can be booked for 30, 45 or 60 minutes as regularly as needed or recommended by your therapist.
-
There is no universal rule — frequency depends on training load, injury status, goals, and personal preference.
Initially, treatments may be weekly or fortnightly (depending upon your reason for joining us), however this might be extended to monthly or six weekly intervals as you move onto long-term management.
-
Sports massage can feel intense, especially around trigger points, but should never be unbearably painful. Communication with the therapist is key and we will always adapt your treatment to you individually.
-
Sports massage is generally safe with adapted pressure and positioning; some prefer to avoid the first trimester.
-
Most research recommends booking on a rest day or after training, with lighter pressure if booked directly before a workout or event.
-
Not at all!
Sports massage can be both therapeutic and relaxing, depending on goals.
-
This depends upon the reason for booking an appointment. If you have an injury or problem, we would recommend booking in with a physiotherapist first to ensure that there aren’t any underlying issues.
Many of our clients are co-managed between our physiotherapy and sports massage therapy team.
